As you are all aware, roof racks come in all shapes and sizes.

What works for me is to use 3" minicell foam, shaped to the hull of the particular kayak I am transporting, and then glued to 2x4 cross pieces.

The center saddle is removable and is replaced with another to fit a canoe hull if and when I will be canoeing.

I have a truck with a lumber rack, however, this design could be easily modified to fit any vehicle.

I have logged thousands of miles using this contraption and have had no damage to my boats whatsoever.
