Disclaimer re: my "bias": I have built CLC's Chesapeake 17 from plans and their North Bay XL (lightweight) from a kit.

If you're a first time builder, it doesn't get much easier than a stitch and glue kit, so I think you're headed in the right direction. Also, as anyone here can attest, the compliments that you'll get on a hand built wooden boat of any kind will make you totally forget those hours (and hours...) of sanding.

If you like the CLC boats, you might want to check out their Chesapeake 16LT. It's stable, tracks well and is fairly quick to build. (I don't know what your time frame for buying is, but CLC usually has a major kit sale in late November/December.)

Pygmy's line of boats/kits also gets VERY high marks from virtually everyone who builds/paddles them. You might want to check out their Artic Tern 14'.

Both companies produce very high quality, complete kits (including epoxy and glass) and I think you'll be happy either way you decide to go.
