: I plan on building a stich and glue kayak this fall, and have been looking
: around for plywood. None of the lumberyards around here (Winnipeg,
: Manitoba) carry okoume or meranti or luaun. One place will order okoume
: for me, but I have to buy a minimum of 25 sheets (ouch!). A few do carry
: 1/8" birch and oak plywood. I believe the oak and birch is just a
: veneer, I'm not sure what the core is made of. It looks quite nice. Would
: this suffice for a stitch and glue kayak? I am concerned that the wood is
: too dense or heavy for such a project.

Either one will probably do; with oak being a little heavier -- not desirable, a little more expansive -- not desirable, and open pore(may absorb more epoxy) -- again not desirable.
I'm suprise they do not stock luaun. It is a lot less expansive and very goog for paint. Well, what do I know in Manitoba -- never been there myself! Some day may be.
For the price of oak ply and not much more, you can order by mail from Noah and afew site listed in the past on this BBS.
I'm sure someone else can help you out.
I built mine on doorskin. The wood looks OK but my work is less than desirable. May be the next one.....
