Telephone poles are often treated with very nasty chemicals to prevent them from rotting. I wouldn't touch them unless you know for certain they are "preservative" free. If these are slated for removal, they are probably pretty old and were installed before some of the nastier chemicals were banned.

I usually love to scrounge old wood, but some stuff isn't worth it.
