It's also a good place to stuff a sponge or deflated paddlefloat.

Mine are glassed at the top and bottom, and I've still cracked similar installations in others' boats. When you're developing a powerful hipsnap, you can put a lot of force on the boat in those locations.

: On my next boat I think I will wait to install the cheek plates until after
: the deck and hull are mated, reinforce the hull where the cheek plate will
: sit with multiple layers of fiberglass and make them full length running
: from the coaming down and attaching to the hull.

And still use a fillet and glass behind the cheekplate.
