If you decide on a skeg, locatin it just back of the cockpit will not be very effective. The problem is that you will have the skeg near the pivot point of the boat. It needs to be away from the pivot point to be effective.

Paddling in a river is not a good place to judge tracking. The boat tracks well and is easily influenced by the currents, which go in every direction. Greenlake is a better test. Another good place to try out is near the seawall at Gasworks Park when there is a south wind--nice clapotis. OR the south side of the 520 bridge in a good south wind.
