Hi Mark,

This doesn't answer your question but comes under any thoughts. Urethane vs varnish seems to be a mystery in the differences between the two. Some very smart people on the board say there is no difference. My own experience many years ago was urethane lasted much longer then marine spar varnish and was touted as a new much better replacement for marine spar vanish when it first came out. That is why I bought and used it and it was true for me. Yesterday I emailed a manufacture of urethane to ask the question "is urethane different then varnish?" The answer came back that it was but they didn't explain the difference. Now I am on the Minwax bulletin board trying to find out that answer. I came across this finishing technique for polycrilics and it might be interesting to try it on polyurethane.

Poly finish smooth as glass!

I exclusively use Minwax stains in my business. www.futurecollectibles.com
I build country furniture and there is no place in the U.S. that I can't send a customer to find the color that they want. I've also scanned the Minwax stain chart and I e-mail to my customers. One of the things my customers really like is the glass-like finish I have with Polycrylic. I brush it on (usually 3 coats without sanding between - waiting 30-45 minutes between coats.) When I get through, I use a sanding block with 600 grit wet or dry paper and use water as a lubricant. It takes very little effort to produce a fantastic flat and smooth top. To even further the process, I use Minwax paste wax on top of that after 24 hours. You'd think it was a sprayed lacquer finish (but with better results!)
