I would recommend buying a copy of Nick Schade's book, The Strip-Built Kayak. In it there is a full chapter devoted to paddle making. I made a paddle from the plans in the book and it turned out great. I made three more using my own designs but based on what I learned from the first. When you are done making the paddle you can turn your attention to building a boat, which is even more fun!
