I bought 1x6x6' cedar fence boards @ $2.39 ea. by picking through the pile at our local lumber yard I was able to get mostly clear, flat grained wood, which is what you need for milling your own strips. It took 17 boards to make an 18 1/2' canoe. even with sales tax my wood cost was less than $50. I think I've 20 or 30 screwd up strips stuffed away in the rafters of my shop (steep learning curve for me), so figure 14 or 15 boards .
