paddle testing

After adding a coat to my newest paddle, I was leaning into it in the shop tonight, and cracked it. I was a little suprized, and none too happy about it. I liked that paddle. And as I was thinking that I had been putting way more force into it than I could ever do from the boat, I realized that may not be the case. What's a good benchmark to test a paddle for strength? I'm quite sure I was putting way more force into it than if I had been rolling, but does that mean that I couldnt have broken it in the water?

Needless to say, the replacement will have (just a little) more beef.
