In Response To: first varnish coat (Ron Wiebe)

: I have a question about the first coat of varnish. I am just finishing the
: final
: sanding on the epoxy coat and was wondering if I need to cover the transition
: edge for the outer seam tape. I have sanded the edge of the tape to a
: smooth transition, so now it has open weave showing, and I was wondering
: if I varnish right over that or do I have to do another fill coat over
: that area and then sand some more. (Any help would be appreciated if I
: don't have to do anymore sanding). thanks, Ron

Ron, I did a similar thing but I sanded the whole tape seam and the result was the etire seam weave showing even though I had built up several fill coats . I tried adding more epoxy but, the weave still showed through.
Here is how I fixed the problem:
I cut bias strips of 1/2 oz. cloth and covered the entire seam again, added more fill coats and carefully sanded again. The thin cloth is quick to fill and easy to work with. This solved the problem for me. I no longer can see the weave. I'm on my second coat of varnish and it still looks good.

It will delay your varnish job though.
