: Without belaboring the point, what kind of flaw was this?

The flaw I noticed was a glaring one for a $25,000 canoe. The hull was made of mahogany and at one stem on one side the color was decidedly different. Obviously they ran short of the other color. I would not let such a gaff pass on one of my boats. I guess they thought no one would notice.

: Watch it Rob. Perhaps I was overstating the quality of Woodsong boats, as I
: have only seen what is presented on the web (being on the west coast, I
: have not seen one of these boats in person), but what I have seen is
: definitely worth admiration. There is far more there than just 'gloss and
: glitter.' And just because one's sense of design differs from yours, you
: shouldn't assume one has no training in it. (That's about as close to
: flaming as I'll get).

: It appears that you value form and function more than execution, as do most
: of us on this board. But, hey, even though his may not be boats that you
: have any interest in building or paddling, can't you give Phil some credit
: for creating canoe shaped artwork that looks good?

If they and you place them at the top of the pile they deserve scrutiny.

It's exactly because they are so pretentious to equate their boats with "art" and are creating legends in their own minds, that I hope you will see there is less value than meets the eye.

I'm not going to say a peep about you or the next guy putting rhinestones on your gunnels. I'm on the lookout for quality work and design probably more than the rest of you because it's my work and passion. I'm happy to give credit where credit is due. I've stated here Jerry Stelmok canoes are a sterling example of outstanding craftsmanship and design. I have no doubt my standards are higher than most.

If you replace the exotic woods with traditional ones there is nothing that sets these boats apart. The sculpted canoe seats are poorly designed and the internal struts are there for what reason? You can hardly pick it up, and the interior gloss bottom will help you fall on your ass if you dare step inside. All considerations are subservient to eye-candy=bucks generation.

All the best,

Rob Macks
