The problem with using a balance method for canoes with kayaks is that with canoes the paddlers usually sit near the ends, and are far from each other. On a trip their luggage usualy goes between them. However, in a kayak the paddlers usually sit in the center of the boat, and reasonably close to each other, with any gear being store ahead of or behind them.

I think Hazen has some drawings of where paddlers go in his double kayaks, but i don't have the book in front of me at the moment. I'll have to check to be certain. Certainly data like this would be a big help.
