I chucked a 2" drum sander in my 3/8" drill and carefully sanded the rings smooth. Keep the drum moving and use both hands on the drill. Lots of dust, but it went pretty quickly and was a lot easier than doing it by hand. By being extra careful, I was able to sand the outside of the combing spacers prior to gluing on the combing rim.
