Closed Cell Foam

I was in Menards yesterday and came across closed cell foam used to insulate basements. It comes in a package of 6, of 1 1/2" x 14 1/2" x 4' for $7 something. I don't know if it would be any good for seats but I will use it for floatation in the stem and stern and sealed in fiberglass. Menards and Lowe's do not sell varnish in my area, only polyurethane, so it looks like it is taking over that market for the more common uses. Two friends came over yesterday saying they heard I was building a boat and wanted to see it. They were overwhelmed by the looks of these kind of boats and the questions started. What are they made of, what kinds of wood, how much do they weigh, where do you get plans, and so on. I can see now that getting into the water quickly may be difficult.
