Tom,

That is the big secret for eliminating the problem of legs going numb in a kayak. The more suuport under the thighs, the less chance of your legs going to sleep. The trick is to have the thigh support high enough and far enough forward, but not so high that it cuts off circulation or pinches nerves in the thighs.

I found that even a small thermarest seat works if I sit right at the back edge. It is even better with some small minicel foam wedges under the front of it.

A trick that has been used to help with the problem is to patially inflate your paddle float under your thighs for more support. This works good but may cause problems in an emergency wet exit. It may interfere with the exit, or the float may come out of the cockpit and blow away when you wet exit.
