Don,

Lake Chelan is great. We spent a few days in a condo on the lake at the populated south east end and had a lot of fun. It would be a great kayak trip in the summer because the weather is almost always warm and the lake is 55 miles long. At the northwest end is the little town of Stehekin which is the eastern gateway to the North Cascades and is only accessable by boat, air, or a very long hike. There are campgrounds all along the lake for the boating folks and trails into the mountains abound. A week or two trip would be ideal.
