One of the great things about this BBS is that you never have to worry when you digress a little bit from kayak-building; chances are there are dozens of other participants who will know what you are talking about.

I read your post and went to my bookself to look up the plans in Gardner's book. I wasn't there. Then I remembered that it was upstairs on my bedside table.

My first thought was, "Wouldn't it be difficult to glass the inside and outside of a lapstrake boat?" Are you by any chance thinking of planking it carvel-style?

I though about some of these issues a few years ago after a stop at the Adirondack Guide Boat shop in Charlotte, Vermont. I don't remember if they glass the outsides of their wooden boats, but they could, since the outside of the hull is smooth. But I'm quite sure they don't glass the inside, with all the ribs in the way. And that's OK since the ribs add the strength lost by the lack of glass.

On the Lincolnville Salmon Wherry I think I'd tackle putting in the 1"x1" ribs on 1' centers before I'd try glassing the lapped-plank insides. On the other hand, why not epoxy coat the planking as a moisture barrier?

Please tell us some more about your project.
