what your words say to me is that the mortices(holes for the ribs) were long or very deep so that you could move the rib up or down in the hole to meet the stringer. and that the mortices were likely the same size as the ribs(like no turned down tenons and no shoulders).

and then you drilled thru ea rib/gunwale joint to pin the rib in place?
