You can probably use the regular resin instead of a gel coat. think of applying the resin layers in reverse, with your top coat going on first, and you'll get the idea. The same pigments that are used to color polyester resin can usually be used to color epoxy. Check with your resin supplier.

A lot of the time people use polyester resin for this sort of thing as it is cheaper and more rigid.

Check with www.fibreglast.com and look at some of their online "brochures" that deal with molding fiberglass. They have lots of tips.
