: Several days ago Rob Macks posted a thread about using Gorilla glue for
: stipping; he suggested running a 1/32" bead in the joint. I tried
: using this glue generally and found that its properties of expanding
: volume 3X and another listers comment about the fact that it clogs a
: syringe, caused me to wonder how to apply it consistently. Does anyone
: (Rob, are you there?) have any suggestions as to how to apply it. I
: understand the Titebond II works well in a syringe and cleans up easily
: with water, which is an attractive option. Since I live in the deep south
: where temps get hot in the summer, the Gorilla glue was attractive based
: on Rob's experience of Titebond possibly causing flecking under the glass.
: Thanks for any suggestions.

I use the bottle to apply the glue. Don't buy a large bottle because you have to use the whole thing. Once you open polyuerathane glue, it will not last like yellow glue.

Because I use the bottle to apply the glue I buy the brand (if I have a choice) that makes a long narrow bottle with a pointed tip.

I see I'm using Elmer's ProBond, 8 oz., $8.

For deck strips I apply glue to the new strip, not the edge of the old strip attached to the boat.

I set spring clamps on a couple stations to hold a strip once when I’m ready to apply the glue. Then I add a couple spring clamps to the strip edge I'm not applying glue to. This holds the strip with the edge up so I don't need to hold the strip at all while I apply the glue.

Rubber gloves are a must because of long lasting stains and common sense.

I hold the glue bottle in one hand with the tip of my little finger on the tip of the glue bottle. Then I place the bottle tip and my finger tip on the edge of the strip and squeeze the bottle, moving along the strip smoothly to apply an even bead. It takes a little practice, but can be very fast once you get the hang of it.

For the hull I apply glue to the old fixed strips, with cove up, if I'm using Cove and bead.

Glue application is similar to above except that I use a finger from my other hand to guide the glue bottle tip on the strip edge.

I used to get yellow glue in pointed tip bottles but I can't anymore. However, I've found the application technique I described works just as well with the broader tip of the new TiteBond glue bottles.

Once I round the curve of the bilge on the hull I apply glue to new strips as on the deck.

All the best,
Rob
