If you can afford the extra cost definitely go for the variable speed. I've never seen a pistol grip but I have a barrel grip by Black & Decker. It's very aggressive and looks as if it started life as a 4" grinder. I would not recommend it unless you already have a palm grip ROS. It has a two-hand grip because you only last about 5 minutes trying to control it with one hand. If you are looking for a brand recommendation I'm a big DeWalt fan--I have never been disappointed with their products. Good luck. Tom
