Penetrating Epoxy

I just barely sanded through the epoxy in a couple of spots on the decks of my two Chesapeakes in prep for varnishing. My question is, has anyone tried treating these spots with penetrating epoxies that have a high solvent content instead of recoating with our regular epoxies? I'm trying to avoid the waiting time for full cure before I can varnish. Also has anyone just varnished over these spots and what was the results?

Note: I'm not all the way through. Water still beads up and doesn't soak in but there is a tone change in those spots.

Thanks John.
