Really cool Ross! Did you cut the diamonds all to exact on the tablesaw? And do you think it'd be easier with no coves?

I already stole your "Liedy-lids" idea. Come next boat I may just plaigerize this, too!

: Thanks, John. Nothing quite so complicated in doing the inlay - I assembled
: the inlay in-place. After cutting the slot and using a microplane to give
: it a uniform width (up until the narrow ends), I glued the 1/8"
: boundary strips to the sides of the slot. Then I measured the new opening
: width and cut a load of diamond-shaped strips at half that width. Then I
: just glued pairs in-place (the photo is after the first few sets).
: Usually, the diamonds need a little tweaking to go around the curves, so
: each one is custom fit. You have to be careful about one side getting
: ahead of the other, so sometimes I needed to file-down a new bead on one
: piece to get it to line up properly. It's a little tedious, but it appears
: to yield a good fit. Time will tell, however, once I start fairing. I may
: open up some ugly gaps. Luckily, I should be able to fill them with
: thickened epoxy to match the dark redwood, so I'm hoping they won't be too
: noticable.
