In Response To: kayak building for older scouts (Chris Streeter)

: I have a group of Varsity Scouts (14-15 years old). We are thinking of making
: our own kayaks to take on a 3-day river trip (on a fairly tame river,
: obviously). We need something fairly easy to make, rugged enough to last
: our three days (stopping and camping in the evenings) and last, but not
: least, something that will not cost a fortune. Is this asking for too
: much?
Chris,
Checkout Wooden Boat Mag., May/June 1986. Plans are included for a 14' kayak, designed by a shop teacher for his class. Kayak is constructed from 2 sheets of 1/8" plywood-stich and glue.I'm presently test building one (3/4 Completion) from 1/8" luan for our troop. Larger paddlers will need to increase Dim. and use 3 or 4 sheets of luan. ($8 to $10 per sheet).I'm also considering a small fixed skeg. I have used building techniques from this bulletin board. B.S.A. Troop 116. Paul in Tennessee.
