Most epoxy "manufacturers", like West System, MAS, Raka, etc. are actually formulators. That is, they buy ingredients from the real manufacturers, blend them to obtain whatever properties they desire, and sell the formulation. Dow and Shell are the two largest actual manufacturers of the raw resins, and they both produce excellent products. Prices are downright low too, around $2 per pound. Dow will furnish you upon request a Formulation Guide, which explains the ins and outs of epoxy chemistry, but it really takes a chemist to unwind the complexities involved.

For instance, out of the barrel these products do not correlate by volume, but by molecular weight. It is no accident that formulated epoxies have convenient 1:1 or 2:1 volumetric mix ratios; chemists have worked long and hard to see to it that a certain volume of Part A has exactly the same epoxide equivalent weight as the corresponding volume of Part B. In order for that to occur, various reactive and nonreactive diluents and/or aggregates must be blended into both sides.

I have seen System 3 trucks loading Dow resin at Chem Central, the same place I used to buy it. But the magic is in how it is formulated.

So the short answer, alas, is that Dow resins work fine, but it is unlikely that they will work fine for you. It would probably take more time to concoct a suitable resin/hardener mix than it would take to completely build your kayak/sailboat/surfboard/whatever. My advice (and this is from a guy who has used tens of thousands of gallons of the stuff)? Buy MAS and save yourself the grief.
