In Response To: Sail mast placement-Baidarka (Kevin Stout)

: I am about to build a 21-22 foot wood triple Baidarka. Does anyone have
: suggestions how and where to place a small sail rig (other than close to
: the CG) and any info on what type of a keel board rig and placement to use
: for up-wind sailing.

: Thanks

I'm finishing up an Umiak... actually the 'Sumiak' from Skip Snaith's book, and was doing some research about mast placement, wondering about where it would best work. One way is to determine the 'center of lateral resistance', or something like that. As I understood it, you literally place the boat in the water and find the point along the gunwhale where you can push the boat from the side and it will not favor to either the bow or stern, i.e., it will more or less move sideways and stay perpendicular to the direction of movement. The only problem with this method is that you need a finished boat to do it on. There's probably a mathematical way to calculate the same thing based on displacement numbers and such, but damned if I know how to do that.
