: After doing a final filling of gaps using epoxy and wood flour I've got a few
: spots where the wood surrounding the filled area is slightly darker having
: absorbed some epoxy. My question is whether I should sand this back down
: to bare wood before fiberglassing or will the color blend in once the
: entire area is covered with epoxy. I've scraped back to smooth and sanded
: the entire boat with 100 grit so I'm happy with the shape, just not with
: the color.
: Thanks.
I've had a similar experience today. I'm preparing a kitchen benchtop, this is a solid lump of Macrocarpa 3.5m x 620mm x 60mm. I filled some minor blemishes with epoxy glue (for it's gap filling properties) sanded/scraped it back smooth and then put a coat of epoxy resin over the top. This was a mistake, the area that had the thicker stuff on it is lighter that the area that got the thinner epoxy and it sticks out like you know what. This side now becommes the underside and I will start again on the otherside. The lesson I have learnt today is to get a very thin coat over the whole surface, then fill, then do the finish, be it glass cloth or whatever.
Be it known to all people that I would rather be boat building.
Enjoy this forum imensly, thank you.
