I have to preface this with I am the far from an engineer but that sounds about right. For a s&g they help to hold the hull to shape and add an attaching point for a radiused deck. But if you check out eric's mereganser he doesn't use them because of the multi paneled deck. The sheer clamps wouldn't really work on a design like the guillemot because the deck isn't at an angle to the hull. Extra strength where the deck and hull join is not a bad idea but I wouldn't want to be in the boat when my taped seams separate due to force.
