Good on ya! your post read with considerable interest. I'll have to get my book of timbers out to translate the latin names to what i know the trees as. I recognise Radiata. We've a fair stand of these in the centre of the North Island. How did this timber behave? Did you do anything special to ensure a quality finish?.
I've got a Gt Auk lofted up, and the frames done. Work has been slow due to a major work load on the house building front. I just can'not get enthusiastic about house renovations when there is another boat to be built.
I'm sneaking in an hour or two laminating up a Greenlander paddle to put with my Merganser 18'(Shearwater Boats) This paddle is done with NZ Kauri and thin strips of Mahogany, with a hollow shaft.
Looking forward to seeing a photo or two of your kayak.
