I went a little less than 1/4" but that was after planing. The strips were relatively smooth on both sides at 3/16". I dont think that ending up with strips with saw marks on both sides at 3/16" is such a great idea for a first time builder. It could be done and probably is quite often, but you have less room for error. My strips were also mahogany so I was fairly confident in their strength.
Are you planning on bead and coving your strips?
