Non-issue. We don't necessarily build SOF to be light. We build them to try something different. They can be light, though. I believe Mike's latest came in around 30 lbs.

Not really. A SOF may take compression hits better in some cases. As far as I'm concerned, if I get either type of boat in conditions that cause major structural problems, the difference between SOF and S&G will be the least of my worries :)

I agree here. Your frame should be well sealed.

No need for GR. Platt Monfort has been there - done that. Just need to add the necessary modifications for a kayak. (yet another kayak project!)
