John,
I used a 16' 2 x 10, with a 2 x 4 on edge underneath to create a T beam, then put some legs on it to make a long skinny workbench. I screwed a couple of 1/2" by 3/4" strips on top to make a slot. This has been working well for bevelling and cutting strips to fit. This alows the strip to protrude a 1/4". I am building a Guillemot, and 1/8" would not have been enough sticking up for many of the strips.
Richard.
