H.V.L.P. Spray Gun

has anyone tried to use an H.V.L.P. gun (high volume low pressure) to spray varnish. i have used one to spray paint and it worked really well. the few articles that i have read say that they put about 80% of the material on the work surface as opposed to any conventional spray method, which is somewhere between 20% and 40%. the result being obviously less airborne particles that get on everything and in your lungs. the one i used i rented at the local equipment rental place. when i finish my first boat, i'll try it and let everyone know how it does.
