Roger,

I started on bare wood (fir). Initially, I used a brush, but wasn't pleased with the streaking it gave. I decided to try the "Spidey" rag method which worked well. Currently they have 3 coats sanded at 220 between each. I haven't decided if they are dark enough yet. When they are, I will sand once more and then top it off with a clear spray UV urethane (probably varathane). The only real problems came from using paper towels to do the rag method. They tended to break up and leave annoying little specks. I knew better, but the PT were right at hand and I was being lazy. I saw that someone on the CLC list suggested using (not wearing :)) pantyhose, so maybe I'll try that sometime when my wife isn't looking :-)
