Wood types

A fellow just gave me some Poplar. I know very little about that wood. I think it is also known as Yellow Poplar and it is the same as the Tulip Tree also known as Tulip Poplar, the state tree of Kentucky where I live. Is that a suitable wood for strip planking? The price is right!
