oak strips

Hey guys,

Need some opinions on the topic of scrounging. The cabinet shop I work at has occasional abundances of 3/4" x 16' oak strips up to about an inch wide. I've hauled a few home for gunnels on my canoe and other similar applications. The thought occured to me today that a strip-built oak boat would be quite attractive though certainly heavy not to mention that sanding would be considerably more time-consuming than the redwood I've worked with to date. Any thoughts welcome, particularly as to how much strength would be gained and whether a lighter lay-up of glass could be used to equal things out. Thanks, Tom
