4-1/2" wide is a good way to go. I bought a roll of 4-1/2" sandpaper with pressure sensitive adhesive back to use on my long board made of 1/4" poplar.

An abrasives dealer or auto parts store my be able to sell you a manufactured longboard. Where I work we sell a long pneumatic dual action sander, which is used mostly by guys sanding Bondo on auto bodies.
