: I have access to a large amount of old growth redwood with very tight
: straight grain as well as some of it that is birds eye. Does anyone know
: how this would work for a stripper?

Hi Dave :)

I don't know about your stripper, but, It would work wonderfully on mine, and I'm about to start, so, ship it on out to Fresno, Calif. and I'll write ya back and give you a detailed description of just what it is like and how easy it was to work. By then, I may be able to post pictures. :?)

It will, after the finish is applied, look like the topping of this dish of ice cream sitting here. About two parts hershey's chocolate and two parts juice from a jar of Maraschino Cherries. It will take on a rich, reddish brown color. It will be very easy to work with your saws, and it is very light. I forgot to ask, is it Kiln Dried, or construction grade? No matter, as it will be very light and easy to work. You will want to wear a dust mask and possibly a set of goggles, as it is not pleasant to breath and will irritate your eyes. :) Save the birdseye for the deck, as it is very beautiful to look at under a clear finish. It will literally move as you walk by your boat. It will contrast well with some birdseye pine if you can find it. If it is verticle grain and kiln dried it will not like screws or nails. In 1/4" it will likely split, so, Go stapleless. If you must use staples, don't leave them in the wood very long, as Redwood has an acid in it that corrodes(?) metals and leaves a dark stain in the wood. Go Stapleless!! You will like it. :)

One further note worth mentioning: Redwood has a sort of resin in it and when you cut a lot of it, it will collect on the blades of your saws. Especially the tips of carbide bits. That will give the appearance and feel of dulling your blades, but, a little spritz with some " Easy Off Oven Cleaner " and let it set for 5 to 10 minutes and wash it off, and that will take care of that.
