You can aadd a sail to most any canoe. There is a web site with a guy who built a sunnyside cruiser rigged to sail with a transom stern and rudder. www.enter.net/~skimmer/building/building.html Here are other sites www.profm/SailingCanoe/sailcanoe.html www.duck-trap.com (plans for lapstrake canoes and they have a balanced ketch rig plan for sale too) Iain Oughtred's Macgragor canoe is absolutely beautiful....lug rigged, glued lap ply 12' long can be built 13.5' or so. He has a larger balanced lug rigged design too. These are decked canoes. info is at www.duckflat-woodenboats.com.au

www.tyrone.u-net.com/ (has some sailing canoes-mostly more modern types that are more performance oriented) Prospector models have been used for sailing canoes too. Just choose a nice stripper design to build and build a rig from some plans. You can beef up the stern and add some gudgeons and pintles for mounting a real rudder. there used to be some books from John Bull on building a drop-in sailing rig for your canoe, but I can't locate the information. good luck, garland

: while paddling Bowron Lake chain (northern B.C. Canada) saw in the distance a
: square stern canoe/sailboat. Canoe was approximately 17 ft long with
: single mast mast mid ships and crossbar holding sail furled across
: gunnels. Owner was easily paddling with a full camping load at the time,
: so was definatley a canoe. Could not see manufacturers name and owner did
: not speak english so was unable to get any info on it. Canoe was
: definatley a manufactures design and not home made. Would love to find out
: more about this set up... Could be a blast building. Can anyone point me
: to any pages on this subject???? Ross.
