They come in handy for different things. I usually clip my paddle leash to one and my tether to the other. Also for a quick tie-up to a dock. Also for clipping my one-use waterproof camera. Whatever.

When locating them, I put them below a line connecting the coaming lip and the sheer; that way they don't protrude into the arc of my paddle stroke. Some folks put two just ahead of the cockpit and use them (somehow) as a paddle park.

On my Coho, I use one as the tie-up point for a line running from the cleat forward through my bow grab loop then back behind the cockpit to an anchor point there. Though I haven't used it for this yet, what I had in mind was a quick way of passing a tow line to another boat if I get in trouble and have to be towed, or of tying up to a tree.
