Recycling from further up the (food?) chain

: Recycling list for my nearly finished Great Auk: Cedar: throw away from a
: local builder Maple, Black Walnut: throw away from a furniture shop
: Redwood,Poplar: from the landfill

When my neighbor's remodeling project required the removal of two trees I was happy to remove them. I'm still waiting for the time to rip them into 21 foot long strips. If I hadn't expressed an interest in the entire (long) tree, they would have been cut into firewood minutes after the tree was felled.

Just a thought for those who want to make their own boards: Trees that must come down, for whatever reason, can be used for lumber instead of being chipped for mulch.

After storms, the local electric company cuts away fallen trees, and then cuts them into firewood sized chunks. I'm sure they would rather go on to the next outage rather than stay to make big trees into little ones. It might be possible to talk with local forestry/ road building/ tree trimming companies about getting access to an entire tree. Probably some insurance problems to be worked through, and some concerns about timely removal of the fallen tree, but those are workable problems for anyone who wants to try it. Who knows, you might get into a new business.
