In Response To: Hatch hold down options (Bruce)

: My first attempt with a hold down system for my hatches did not work well so
: I'm looking for another alternative. In the archive I've found internal
: bungee, internal pulley and the old stand-by external straps /bungee. Are
: there and any other worthwhile alt for a secure hatch hold down. I'm
: trying to avoid adding something that will detract for the strip pattern
: in the boat while still being secure and relatively easy to access.

I know there are some out there but don't know what they are. I posted an idea using modified nulocs a couple of days ago to TInGk.

Heres a possible approach/dwgs to a hidden screw latch http://www.kayakforum.com/cgi-bin/Building/KBbbsArchive.cgi?read=15208 just put it thru the hatch and into some ss t-nuts in the flange. Make a slot and align it w/ the grain. If comparing to 2 straps/bungees then 4 bolts would be ok.

and some partial ideas and dwgs of which I think a modified piano hinge technique might be ok. http://www.kayakforum.com/cgi-bin/Building/KBbbsArchive.cgi?read=15628

I'd like to hear abt some successful ones also. My personal view is that they should approach being structural and that therefore the under deck pulley and/or bungee system is suspect under dire conditions.
