Hi Tom ( initials reminded me of the old cartoon charactor...Top Cat ) As to the jig saws, there isn't much you can do with the jig saw that's better than any other saw. It's basically just a portable band saw for items bigger than the bandsaw can handle. They are no more accurate than the hand that holds them. I think that you should look for something with a good strong base and insulated and then just buy one that fits your liking. They are pretty much about the same. Don't go too cheap, but, don't spend any large amount of money on one either. About all they are REALLY good for is cutting sheet metal and thin plywood. The blade tends to float down at the tip and any turn you make in wood thicker than 3/4" will cause an undercut on the bottom side. Without support at the blade tip, they tend to resist turning and cuase the tip to swing outward. I use a craftsman, but, only because the Sears store is close by. Dewalt and Ryobi and others make good saws. You should be able to pick up a very good quality jig saw for around $40 - $60. A $19.00 jigsaw will do the job you want, but, the quality and length of service may not be as long.

A little tip: Since the jig saw cuts on the UP stroke, always cut with the GOOD SIDE of your plywood down. If you are cutting mirror images, cut with the GOOD SIDES together in the center. The wood ( especially plywood ) tends to chip out on the top. Using masking tape where cutting also helps prevent chip out. I hope this helps you with your decision.
