In Response To: Survey: Lose the "Top 10" ? (Spidey)

Hi Spidey,

I look at the Top 10 about once a month, just out of curiousity. I passed Lee once last fall. Guess I just "had to" be #1 at something, just one time! The Top Ten list, though, was also a good 'wakeup call' for me to stop stretching coffee breaks to post everything I could think of! As someone said a long while ago, Shawn fit into the 'Where do they find time to make all these posts' category! Was I spending WAAY too much time posting, as opposed to building boats or paddling them? I won't tell!

I think it's a neat indicator of a person's activity--when someone is really fired up and has a lot of new ideas and building new things, they post a lot, and it's cool to see the indication of that (like you now, or Mike Hanks or Mike Allen about 6 months ago).

I also appreciate Ken Finger's comment. I haven't answered a lot of questions recently, unless they call for everyone's comment, or seem to go unanswered for awhile. I'm definitely not a bottomless source of information--I just answered a lot of questions for awhile because I hit those same questions myself, just a year or so before the people who were asking them. With the exception of a few people, like Nick, Lee, Joe, Eric, and Grant, we're all just amateur builders, learning from each other. Some of us are just a few months ahead on the learning curve, but that's OK, since some of us started a few years ahead of everyone else!

I really like the idea of a bio section that Nick mentioned.

I like the views counter--if someone asks a tough question, and it has a lot of views, but few responses, you can see that there's a need for some more discussion there.

My vote: I like all of the features. If everyone out-voted them, I wouldn't be too upset, though. It's the great discussions here that are most valuable.

Shawn

: Hello All;

: I'm not sure how many people even look at the "Top 10" prolific
: posters. I don't even know if it is regarded as a plus or minus if one is
: prolific or not. Shucks, I don't even know if this is a point worth
: considering for most board members.

: I do know that since I discovered I am fast approaching Lee (one of my
: favorite posters) for 1st place, my posting pattern has changed. I'm torn
: between wishing to impart what info I've gathered, or being known as a
: "prolific poster," and perhaps a "ratchet jaw." Some
: of my responses are made via email as a consequence, although I generally
: feel even my limited building knowledge might help others who are where I
: was just a few months ago.

: Many, if not most of the "Prolific Posters" posts are responses to
: queries (Re:) as opposed to new subject titles such as this one. People
: looking for help with what is a new situation for them, but might be old
: hat for others of us who faced that same dilemna "months" ago .
: . . ;-) I rarely see a new thread started by (i.e.) Lee, or the rest of
: the people in the "Top 10," but these people have been very
: supportive of new and old builders alike, and respond to most posters that
: they can assist. This is good. Having our responses tabulated and reported
: on as a "Prolific Poster" is at least questionable - Unless I am
: 180 degrees out of phase . . .

: How do you feel? What do you think of the format on the design board here at
: KBBS, where the number of views is displayed alongside the title?

: Best Regards, Spidey

: (No direct board responses from me should be anticipated at this moment, only
: one final comment to all [if any] who respond . . . I have to watch my
: prolific score . . .)

: Note to Lee: I did not mean to single you out or involve you in this
: discussion against your will, but after all, you are #1 . . . 8-0
