weight per coat of varnish

Has anyone actually checked to see how much weight is added to a typical 17 ft stripper with each additional coat of varnish. It seems like some people put on three coats and some people put on a dozen. There has to be a point of diminishing returns.UV protection is all we are looking for from the varnish is it not?

Why would one want to put a thick layer of a soft easily scratched material over their nice light durable epoxy-glass armored stripper?
