How much is enough? In a recent post by Philip Greene (Woodsong Canoes), he said that he sprays on his varnish and uses 3 - 4 gallons for a 20' canoe. I recently put two coats on a 14' canoe, and used about a quart (out of a gallon can) for the whole thing. This is one area where no two people will use the same amount of varnish per coat. Too many variables. If you got a few complete coats on and it looks good, it's probably OK.

Jeff

: I purchased a quart of Captains varnish and applied 3 coats to the hull and 5
: coats to the deck of my Osprey Double. I still have about a quarter of the
: can left. Did I put the varnish on too thin? I only thinned the final coat
: and I didn't thin it very much. I am concerned about having enough UV
: protection.

: Thanks, Tom
