I wrote abt this before when we were talking abt scarfing, but if you have short boards, you can do the 'w's longitudinally almost getting continuous grain on your made up scarfs. Assuming the scarf is across the 1/4in, at the surface the grain matches perfectly, but the more you sand you get a slight bit of misalignment if the grain is not perpendicular. If you were finger jting, you'd only do it after alternate flipping the bds end for end.

Assuming 9 or 10foot boards (17-19ft yak) and the double stack (or more), you can book match the first few bds, as well as get the continuous grain past the cockpit untill the cockpit opening allows you use separate boards to do the continuous bookmatching fore and aft of the previous posts. The possibilities.

But this is all for 'joe pros', I'm still driving staples and getting strips from the scrap bin.
