Thank you for the input, all. Part of my problem has been the ambient temperature, which is in the upper 80's & low 90's this time of year. Scraping did not work too well, and ice packs proved both slow and only marginally useful. I finally scraped out as much as I could then used acetone to remove the rest. (No Bestine at the Office Depot) This seemed to work well, and the hot glue peeled off rather than melted, so there is no residue in the wood grain.
