: A good-tracking boat need not be hard to turn, you just need to know the
: technique of putting the boat up on edge a bit to carve the turn. Or put
: it completely up on edge, shear to the sky, and you can actually turn on a
: dime. I don't know how to do this yet, but I have Jay Babina's video and
: he lays down in the water and sculls the Outer Island in a circle.

: True, the Greenlanders didn't play in rock gardens. Neither do most of the
: rest of us.

And I don't usually either.

: The inuits did add small rub strips/keels onto the outer skin of some of
: their kayaks, but generally it's hull shape that determines tracking
: characteristics. Their kayaks were definitely designed with hunting in
: big, open water in mind, not recreation. It is my belief that the majority
: of us require kayaks that get us efficiently from point A to point B, in
: meandering curves or relatively straight courses, but that few really
: require that turn-on-a-dime ability.

And I also like to get from point A to point B efficiently and to me efficient means putting as much of the energy from my paddle strokes into forward motion as opposed to corrective strokes. I'm leery of using edgeing in large open water with big waves.

Oh BTW, I'm paddling one of Nicks designs so we know the design is good, with a skeg I built, and I agree that it is a possible failure point. If it ever got stuck in an extended position it could cause me a lot of grief. I could add a very shallow fixed skeg at the rear to balance the boat for most conditions but then I think I'd lose the playful nature of this boat.
